Advice You Didn’t Ask For: A Word On Your Thoughts

Positive self-talk sounds pretty hippy-dippy but it can make a huge difference in your every day life. If you walk around all day telling yourself you suck and that you are ugly and that you can’t do it (whatever IT is) then it will become true.

“Your mind will be like its habitual thoughts;
for the soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts.”

~ Marcus Aurelius

If you don’t take things too personally and you keep your thoughts in the positive you will always have a better day. If you focus on the negatives all day then you will not only run yourself down but likely your day will be bleak. “No thought lives in your head rent free” and each thought you think literally uses some of your body’s electrical energy. You would be surprised at how run down you can get just running through random thoughts in the day.

“The thought manifests as the word; The word manifests as the deed; The deed develops into habit; And habit hardens into character. So watch the thought and its ways with care, And let it spring from love born out of concern for all beings.” ~ Buddha

If something negative occurs, going into a tailspin of negativity doesn’t change anything. In fact thoughts can’t change ANYTHING. You can’t worry a situation into being fixed, you can’t beat yourself up to make yourself thin, you can’t anger a situation into being resolved. Negative thoughts literally do nothing.

“Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies.” ~Nelson Mandela

Make yourself mindful of what thoughts come up, you are not a victim of your mind. If you are getting angry, sit there for a second, what is actually happening? What can you change? What are you going to do? Are these constructive thoughts? Likely not…

Do you loop back to some central negative theme in your life? Feel fat or unmotivated? Give yourself a break, be a better friend to yourself. Keep your thoughts positive, it really will change your mood.

“The hardest thing in the world is to assume the mood of a warrior. The trick is in what one emphasizes. We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same.” ~Don Juan

The amount of work is the same. We can either be negative and unsupportive of ourselves, or we can accept what we have to do, clear our minds and just go ahead and do it.

“If you place a thing in the center of your life that lacks the power to nourish, it will eventually poison everything that you are and destroy you, as simple a thing as an idea or your perspective on yourself or the world, no one [thing] can be the source of your content, it lies within, in the center.” – Faithless

So anyways, these are some quotes I try to remember. Keep your mind clean of negative thoughts, if you can’t change something today then give yourself a fucking break and just accept it, listen to what your mind is saying and don’t get into a negativity spiral.
